Tropical Storm Isaias (ees-ah-EE-ahs) is expected to become a hurricane on Friday as it moves to the northwest at about 20 mph. Isaias was centered about 95 miles northwest of Great Inagua Island, Dominican Republic Thursday evening and had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.
“Isaias is forecast to be near the central Bahamas Friday night and move near or over the Northwest Bahamas and near South Florida on Saturday,” according to the National Hurricane Center.
The Hurricane Center added that “there is a risk of impacts from winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge this weekend along the Florida east coast and spreading northward along the remainder of the U.S. east coast through early next week.”
Isaias weakened slightly as it interacted the Dominican Republic on Thursday, but has since moved over warm waters. Current forecast models suggest that Isaias will stay east of Florida and potentially impact the Carolinas on Monday.
