Tropical Disturbance Twenty-two Threatens Texas Coast

Written by John Clark | Sep 18, 2020 5:00:00 AM

Tropical Depression Twenty-two formed in the western Gulf of Mexico Wednesday evening and forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm over the weekend. When it does form, it will most likely be named Beta, the second Greek Alphabet named-storm of the 2020 hurricane season.

Wilfred, which formed west-southwest off the Cabo Verde Island, is the final named storm of the 2020 hurricane season’s alphabetic name list.  Hurricane forecasters are forced to begin using letters from the Greek Alphabet for future storms. The first Greek Alphabet name is Subtropical Storm Alpha, which formed off Portugal’s coast on Friday.

The National Hurricane Center stated, “There is an increasing risk of heavy rainfall and flooding along the Texas coast from Sunday through at least the middle of next week as the system is forecast to move slowly near the Texas Coast.”
