Tropical Depression developing in the Gulf of Mexico

A new tropical depression is likely to form in the Gulf of Mexico within the next day or so. The chance of tropical formation in the next 48 hours is 90%, according to The National Hurricane Center’s Tropical Weather Outlook.

The large area of disturbed weather, which currently located over the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, is the remnants of eastern Pacific Tropical Storm Amanda. It is expected to move northwest into the Bay of Campeche later today or tonight, where environmental conditions are expected to be favorable for tropical development.

The tropical disturbance will likely bring heavy rains to parts of Mexico and Central America. Forecast models are pointing at the storm affecting the Texas gulf coast, as early as next Tuesday.

Today marks the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season, which will run until November 30. 2020 is predicted the fifth year in a row with above-normal tropical activity. The next named storm is scheduled to be Cristobal, which will be the third of the season.
